Concert Preparation and Performance
Concert preparation is an independent studies program designed for advanced vocalists who are ready to present a solo concert. It includes mentoring in image development, preparing and using effective marketing materials including social media, repertoire selection, budgeting and hiring musicians, set programming, and stage presence.
Concerts are booked at the Jazzschool and are advertised through the Jazzschool catalog, on the Jazzschool website, on social media sites, on various calendars in the Bay Area including KCSM, and in-house at the Jazzschool. We provide the venue, on-line ticket sales, professional sound engineer, a recording of your concert, and supportive guidance.
I work very closely with each singer to insure that the performance they give is true to their vision of themselves as an artist, that they feel prepared, confident and supported. Several of our past particpants are now performing regularly in the Bay Area.

Maye Cavallaro is something of a magician: She can take a sow's ear of a show, crazy concept, misbegotten set list, half-assed arrangements, and help shape it into something that will pass for a credible silk purse. Her magic tricks? A pat on the back, a kick in the butt (sometimes simultaneously) and expert advice, all delivered with kindness and honesty by someone with unmatched experience as entertainer, teacher and music lover. In the end, it will still be your show, but if Maye has had a hand in it it will be a much better one. Jack Dynis

"Maye Cavallaro's Concert Preparation Program at the Jazzschool gave me all the tools I needed to launch myself as a regularly gigging professional jazz singer. She covers everything: marketing, hiring & rehearsing the band, selecting material, developing arrangements, organizing set lists, wardrobe, stage presence and more--it is a very broad education. Having an experienced, supportive, friendly professional to guide me through the process was an invaluably helpful experience. It requires a lot of time, effort and dedication, but if you want your singing to make the quantum leap from performing at open mics and recitals to owning the stage for an entire show, there's nothing better out there." "Maye teaches you to be prepared in a way most performers are not. From budget, to running your own band, to marketing yourself & show. She guides you into being true to who you are as a performer. I will continue to take everything I learned with me for the rest of my career." Lena Sunday

"A major benefit of the concert prep program is that it focuses one's concentration and energy. There is a date certain and tickets are being sold. Working with a mentor, of course, is priceless. Friends are all well and good, but for the most part they tell you what they think you want to hear. An independent advisor, particularly one with the background and experience of Maye Cavallaro, is of paramount importance to the concert prep process. The advice, nurturing support, and honest feed-back are what guided me in the right direction and held me steady on my course." Angharad Jones

"The concert prep program provided me with the necessary tools to launch myself as a jazz vocalist. In addition to the invaluable experience of preparing for and giving my own concert at the Jazzschool, it taught me the important steps to producing a concert on my own, from marketing and publicity to hiring musicians and working with a band. Most importantly, it was instrumental in building my confidence and giving me a foundation from which to work."
